How to Invent

Download the application form.
Have Mom, Dad or your legal guardian sign the application form so you have permission.

Now the work really begins!  Its time to think of your great new idea.  Here are some suggestions:
  1. Is there a toy that could be improved?  Would it be more fun to play with?
  2. Is there a better way to save water or electricity in your house?
  3. Does something you use break down often?  Is there a way to change it so it always works?
  4. Can you make something safer to protect other children from getting injuries?
  5. Can you make something smaller or lighter so it can be carried easier?
Write out how your new invention will work.  List all the advantages it has over what already exists.  What is the best way to make it?  How is it put together?  Are there different ways to make it work?  Who would buy your invention?  Where would you sell it?
Sketch out a drawing of the invention.  Name each part in your drawing.  You might want to draw it from different views.  How does it look from the front?  How does it look from the side?

That's it.  Finalists will be called the evening of February 1, 2010.  The five (5) elementary school finalists and five (5) middle school finalists will receive instructions on how to prepare for the competition on February 11, 2010 at Tampa's Museum of Science and Industry for the Grand Prize.
